1.) Patient

2.) Directional Breathing Valve
Hans Rudolph Two-Way Non-Rebreathing Valve; T Shape Configuration, Series 1410 Small (P/N 112626; Model No.1410A)
Hans Rudolph, Inc. - 7200 Wyandotte - Kansas City, MO 64114- phone 800-456-6695 - e-mail hri@rudolphfc.com - web site www.rudolphkc.com

3.) Negative Pressure Guage

Vacuum gauges may be obtained from MARSH-BELLOFRAM.. They have a web site http://www.marshbellofram.com with specifications. Look in the "G Series." If you need to talk to a Applications Engineer call 800-727-5646 or fax 304-387-1212.

You will need to order through your local distributor. Call 800-727-5656 to identify same. As this is not a standard product you will need to specify the following:

PRESSURE RANGE: A negative pressure gauge is required, and a plus / minus gauge is not suggested. 0-100" VAC (250 cm H2O) is suggested, in order to perform Maximal Inspiratory Pressure tests as well as the Dyspnea Perception test. If you already have a MIP setup, then order the 0-30" VAC (75 cm H2O) or 0-60" VAC (150 cm H2O) gauges.

DIAL SIZE: 2 1/2 inches is standard, and 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 inch models, which are easier to read, are also available.

CASE STYLE - CONNECTION SIZE AND LOCATION: Standard connection is "CB" (Plain case with center back connect) for the 2 1/2 " models. The larger sizes are "LM" (Plain case with bottom connect). Specify the 1/8 inch connection; the larger sizes are 1/4 inch.

QUANTITY: The number of gauges wanted.

Your distributor will consult with the factory and then give you a price and delivery date. The 2 1/2 inch models are approximately $75. The 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 models cost approximately $120 and $150 respectively.

4.) Inspiratory Restrictor.

Your laboratory probably has some sort of restrictor valve. If not, a simple Screw Pinch Valve, constricting flexible tubing could be used. The Cole-Parmer Instrument Company (800-323-4340) makes a screw clamp (Part No. P-06404-30) that will work on up to a 3/4 inch tube.

Or you might consider a 1/2 inch Gate Valve, a commonly used water shutoff valve that may be obtained at your local hardware store.

5.) "T" Adapter

6.) Connecting Hose (36 inch length to patient)

7.) Enclosure / Mounting Box.

See the section on Dyspnea Perception Detection System for background and methodology. The reference to the Kikuchi protocol in the New England Journal of Medicine is there, as well as the suggested settings for the steady-state Hillsman / Sierra Biotechnology method using the BIStm technique.
