The Breathing Trainer v1.0 prompter is a simple appearing, yet quite sophisticated, visual prompting breathing display that is part of the Biofeedback Incentive System tm family of breathing control products. It is designed primarily for individual home use.
Breathing training involves many applications ranging from Yoga, Meditation, Stress and Blood Pressure control, to athlete Inspiratory Muscle Training.
Dyspnea (shortness of breath) control in COPD, Emphysema and Asthma is a major clinical application, as emphasized in this web site. Panic Attack control with hyperventilation symptoms is another major application. These, and many other breathing related situations are suitable for using the Breathing Trainer prompter for optimizing respiratory performance.
To understand the Breathing Trainer it is helpful to briefly review it's background. It started with the original sophisticated clinical and research device Biofeedback Incentive System tm which was invented by Deane Hillsman, M.D. and used in his practice of Pulmonary Rehabilitation for many years. This original development may be seen in the Biofeedback Incentive System section. This evolved into a free downoad demonstration LabVIEW version which may be seen in the BIS-T1 Demo section. The Breathing Trainer is essentially a simplified version of that product, but without the real time subject breathing signal. The necessary hardware to provide that breathing signal costs about $2,500, making it unsuitable as an economical home breathing prompter.
